The endowment problem

Thousands of homeowners were encouraged to buy endowment mortgages during the 80s and 90s. The promise of interest-only repayments and a lump-sum windfall at the end of the term made these products extremely popular.

Now, it is clear that many of these endowment policies were mis-sold. Customers were badly advised, given few alternatives and often left unaware of the risks associated with an investment-based mortgage policy.
